Curtis Calderon, born January 8, 1975, is the “freshest” of the Freshmen, being the most recent member to join the group in 2001. From San Antonio, TX, Curtis started playing trumpet at the age of 11. As a teenager he took lessons from a highly regarded music teacher. “I couldn’t wait for my lessons; I took as many as I could. Of course, it was just a coincidence that my teacher was a beautiful female. She was my first crush.” Those many lessons have paid off.
Having traveled throughout the world with various bands from the Glenn Miller Orchestra to the Hoagy Carminchael Centennial band before joining the Freshman, it wasn’t until years later that he began to sing. Calderon has quickly caught on to the complex Freshmen vocal harmonies. Calderon currently sings the second part, plays trumpet and flugel horn for the Freshmen. His musical influences include Chet Baker, Miles Davis, and Stevie Wonder.
